︎︎︎ Type: Residential, Agritourism
︎︎︎ Phase: Competition (shortlisted)
︎︎︎ Location: Barreira, Portugal
The guesthouse for the Verde family is situated within the landscape of the neighborhood, relating to its neighbors through a simple material palette and common roof form.
The house is composed of three sections organized by a series of parallel and perpendicular brick walls - service, tasting, and guestrooms. The three sections gently step down the slope of the site. A garden is inserted with an olive tree at the center facing the tasting room - a reminder of the cycle of olive oil production, and a useful visual aid for teaching guests.
After descending into the earth through the hearth-volume on the south side, guests enter the cellar. The meditation space is located on the other side, with a reflecting pool.
Operable windows at north and south sides allow for cross-ventilation in the tasting room, while a pool on the south side enhances thermal comfort by enabling evaporative cooling.
